Resurrection. 2025. China/France. Written and directed by Bi Gan. With Jackson Yee, Shu Qi, Li Gengxi, Huang Jue. DCP courtesy Janus Films. 156 min.
Known for crafting delirious sensory journeys through time and space, Bi Gan (Kaili Blues, Long Day’s Journey into Night) takes dream-making to the next level with Resurrection, an ambitious cinematic odyssey spanning a century. The film opens as a silent movie in a future where humanity has traded dreaming for immortality. A disruptor (Jackson Yee) appears across multiple chapters—each set in a different era—to keep dreams alive. Just like the history of cinema itself, the film resists a single narrative thread; instead, it evokes the experience of immersive theater, where the audience becomes part of the hallucination. This daring invention won the Special Award at Cannes, where jury president Juliette Binoche likened it to an “unidentified flying object”—a perfect encapsulation of Bi’s singular, otherworldly vision.
