Roofman. 2025. USA. Directed by Derek Cianfrance. Screenplay by Cianfrance, Kirt Gunn. With Channing Tatum, Kirsten Dunst, Peter Dinklage. DCP courtesy Paramount Pictures. 126 min.
Based on the stranger-than-fiction story of Jeffrey Manchester, a military veteran who robbed a string of McDonald’s restaurants, escaped from prison, and established a long-term hideout in the ceiling of a Toys ”R” Us store, Roofman is among Hollywood’s most surprising films of the year. In his most versatile performance outside of the Magic Mike films, Channing Tatum gives a refreshingly vulnerable, multilayered performance opposite a brilliant-as-usual Kirsten Dunst. Shooting in textured 35mm, Derek Cianfrance gives the material a unique grace and tenderness that recalls his previous work on Blue Valentine (2010) and The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)—other portraits of imperfect people trying to love in an imperfect world.
