Misericordia. 2024. France. Written and directed by Alain Guiraudie. With Félix Kysyl, Catherine Frot. DCP courtesy Janus Films. In French; English subtitles. 103 min.
Dangerous games of voyeurism and seduction are often afoot in Alain Guiraudie’s erotic, transgressive thrillers, and Misericordia might just be his most powerfully dark work to date. When a young man returns to the remote Southern French village of his birth to attend a funeral, a confrontation with an old, jealous friend leads to unforeseen consequences. Soon the entire town is embroiled in the mystery of a missing body, concealed with the help of a lustful village priest, and a cat-and-mouse chase fueled by desires both murderous and sexual.
