Where to Land. 2025. USA. Written and directed by Hal Hartley. With Bill Sage, Robert John Burke, Gia Crovatin. DCP. 75 min.
New York filmmaker Hal Hartley’s self-reflective farce about aging and retirement takes off when relatives, friends, and the ex-wife of famous film director Joe Fulton learn he’s making a final will and seeking work as a cemetery groundskeeper. Reuniting a number of his favorite performers for what he’s said may be his last film, Hartley’s first feature in a decade was written for the “spaces I walk through every day,” his neighborhood and apartment. Joe’s interactions with the community of sweetly eccentric characters who crowd around him deliver Hartley’s affectionate satire of generational attitudes, academic overthink, and delusional admiration. Where to Land stoically observes how belief systems and deep-thinking filter through the everyday business of living.
