From the spectacular worlds of music (A Star Is Born, Maestro) to the intimate confines of comedy clubs, actor-writer-director Bradley Cooper has focused his (and our) attention on the intricacies of personal relationships amid the creative set. Marital partnerships in particular provide fertile ground for his investigations of commitment and personal ambition, as evidenced by Is This Thing On? Will Arnett (who cowrote the script) and Laura Dern star as Alex and Tess Novak, well-matched, long-term partners whose marriage is falling apart. Alex attempts to find a way forward by stumbling into the world of stand-up comedy, a choice that may just lead him back to where he always needed to be.
