Grand Tour. 2024. Portugal/Italy/France. Directed by Miguel Gomes. Screenplay by Gomes, Maureen Fazendeiro. With Gonçalo Waddington, Crista Alfaiate, Cláudio da Silva. DCP courtesy MUBI. In Portuguese, Burmese, Vietnamese, English; English subtitles. 129 min.
In a world caught between reality and fantasy, a British civil servant abandons his bride on the eve of their wedding, prompting a cat-and-mouse chase through enchanted, colonized landscapes of East- and Southeast Asia in the early 20th century. Miguel Gomes effortlessly blends black-and-white, color, classic aesthetics, and contemporary documentary footage to take the audience through his Grand Tour, a magical voyage that unites past and present and celebrates, in the Portuguese director’s very own version of Oz, the enchantment, melancholia, and otherworldly power of moving images.
