Sound of Falling. 2025. Germany. Directed by Mascha Schilinski. Screenplay by Schilinski, Louise Peter. With Hanna Heckt, Luise Heyer, Lena Urzendowsky. DCP courtesy MUBI. In German; English subtitles. 149 min.
Director Mascha Schilinski’s second feature washed over audiences at the Cannes Film Festival with a wave of emotion and exhilaration—and was awarded the Jury Prize as a result. Centered around a rural German farm and the imposing family home anchoring it, Sound of Falling guides us through different eras, families, traumas, and discoveries. Bridging world wars, a divided nation, and cultural chasms, this remarkable work will represent Germany in the competition for the Best International Film at the 98th Academy Awards.
