ARCO. 2025. France/USA. Directed by Ugo Bienvenu. Screenplay by Ugo Bienvenu, Félix de Givry. Wth Oscar Tresanini, Margot Ringard. DCP courtesy NEON. In French; English subtitles. 82 min.
A success at Cannes, ARCO, the remarkable debut feature of the French illustrator and animation filmmaker Ugo Bienvenu, is a deeply touching animated fable that recalls the best of Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli films and Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. ARCO follows a boy from the distant future who hitches a ride on a rainbow and crash-lands in the year 2075. There he befriends a lonely girl, Iris, whose only companion is the family robot. Together they must chart a new, more hopeful path for humanity in a world beset by environmental and social hostilities.
