Sotto le nuvole (Below the Clouds). 2025. Italy. Directed by Gianfranco Rosi. DCP courtesy MUBI. In Italian, Syrian Arabic, Japanese, Neapolitan Dialect, English; English subtitles. 114 min.
The latest from Italian nonfiction maestro Gianfranco Rosi is a riveting portrait of Naples, a city often immortalized in cinema that we experience anew through Rosi’s eyes. Below the Clouds presents a place rich in contrasts, where history and memory abut the global present, where ancient splendor meets prosaic grit. Shooting over three years, Rosi memorializes local residents living between the disquieting grandeur of Vesuvius and the tremors of the Campi Flegrei, along with the souls who preserve Naples’s past or make up its future. Through exquisite black-and-white cinematography, encounters with archeologists, museum curators, school children, migrant workers, and public servants form a kaleidoscopic journey from the subterranean to the soaring, and across languages, cultures, and time. “Naples is not Italy,” Rosi has said of his subject, “Naples is a nation on its own.”
