Queer. 2024. Italy/USA. Directed by Luca Guadagnino. Screenplay by Justin Kuritzkes, based on the novel by William S. Boroughs. With Daniel Craig, Lesley Manville, Drew Starkey. DCP courtesy A24. 135 min.
Set in the expat-bar scene of 1950s Mexico City, and inhabited by a menagerie of druggies, hustlers, and lost people, Luca Guadagnino’s Queer—a lush, evocative adaptation of William S. Burroughs’s novel—features a career-best performance from Daniel Craig. Guadagnino and screenwriter Justin Kurtizkes (who last collaborated on Challengers) invite us to entertain the possibility of love in a hopeless place. With a star-making turn by Drew Starkey as the object of Craig’s obsession, the film is libidinous and intoxicating. Guadagnino has described Queer, which was shot entirely on built sets at the legendary Cinecittà studios in Rome, as his homage to the epic films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.
