C’est pas moi (It’s Not Me). 2024. France. Directed by Leos Carax. Screenplay by Carax. With Denis Lavant, Kateryna Yuspina, Nastya Golubeva Carax, Loreta Juodkaite, Bianca Maddaluno, Anna-Isabel Siefken, Petr Anevskii. DCP courtesy Sideshow. In French; English subtitles. 41 min.
Originally commissioned by the Centre Pompidou for an exhibition that never materialized, Carax’s introspective cinematic essay crafts a deeply personal self-portrait traversing his 40-year filmography. Blending archival footage, home videos, and new material (including a clip from MoMA’s restoration of Ernst Lubitsch’s 1924 The Marriage Circle) in a style reminiscent of late-era Jean-Luc Godard, Carax explores decisive moments of his career while reflecting on cinema’s evolution. The film features return appearances by beloved Carax characters like Monsieur Merde (Denis Lavant) and Annette, the uncanny puppet from Carax’s film of the same name. It’s Not Me probes both personal and political subjects, offering a fragmented yet fascinating collage of Carax’s artistic journey as the one-time enfant terrible approaches his 64th year.
