“How did I come to art? By bus,” Thomas Schütte cleverly replied during a 1994 interview. The question was surely not intended to reveal his means of transportation, but indeed, two decades earlier, a teenage Schütte had been bussed to an exhibition on a school field trip, where he saw contemporary art for the first time—an experience so impactful he enrolled at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf the following year. Amusingly unexpected and direct, Schütte’s answer may be equally indicative of his wider artistic methodology. Join Caitlin Chaisson, curatorial assistant in MoMA’s Department of Painting and Sculpture, for a conversation about how Schütte has approached art making with a pragmatism that is both material and intellectual, informed by the systems, circumstances, and conditions of the world around it.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the conversation will begin at 6:00 p.m. Please enter through the Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Education and Research Building at 4 W 54th Street. Advance registration is required and capacity is limited; reservation admits two and is nontransferable.
