Curator, Michelle Kuo: This case gathers together some of Duchamp’s most iconic graphic designs, some of which are connected to exhibitions that he also designed. But others are fantastic composites that he created, melding together found imagery, drawings, and illustrations. And he’s experimenting with cutouts, with illusions, and also photography.
Duchamp often worked with his friends, or writers, or poets, to create these publications. Out of all of the artists in the history of the 20th century, Duchamp is the one who really leads the way with saying, I am gonna collaborate with someone, whether it’s posing for a photograph or making a magazine together. He is constantly in partnership and dialogue with other people.
