GLENN LOWRY: For about six years Lucy McKenzie shared a studio with other artists in her hometown of Glasgow. During this time they inherited a second-hand projector, a screen and about 30 seats enabling them to hold a series of events featuring different artists, musicians, performers and speakers. The Flourish Night posters were advertisements for these gatherings.

LUCY MCKENZIE: The one that says “Flourish Winter Solstice” was for an evening which was held on the Winter Solstice, to celebrate the longest night of the year. And the typography in the logo is copied from the library of Scotland.

The one which is printed with lettering this was done together with Linda Sterling. And she was working with rubber stamps so she just gave me a selection of stamps and said, “Here you go. Make the poster.” So they were all hand made. That’s the only one that isn’t a silk screen.

And the one which has these buildings in silhouette. These were taken from an old book about Glasgow and they’re just very typical post-industrial buildings which Glasgow was known for. And it was for an evening which was about certain ideas of non-space and architecture.

I wanted the posters to be done with so much love because I’ve so appreciated that these performers would come and do something in my studio. So in a way they’re also love letters to them. I wanted to do something that showed how much I appreciated their effort.
