Walid Raad: It's fascinating post September 11 that when you listen to these accounts of that day, we always begin by talking about the weather. About how beautiful it was. It was a clear blue sky, and then … and it's not by accident that the sky comes to be the path, the entryway to talk about this event of extreme violence. The weather is perfect because in a way it permits you to naturalize a historical condition. Who could have predicted this? It's just like the weather. It's unpredictable—even though we can easily scratch at this and talk about the number of historical, political, ideological causes that led to 9/11.
