Artist, Leandro Katz: My name is Leandro Katz. I am a poet and a visual artist.
The Lunar Alphabet is a work I made to construct an alphabet using the phases of the moon. I photographed as the new moon becomes visible, and then the full moon, and the waning moon, and find transitions that will represent each letter of the alphabet.
After I managed to make the alphabet, I began constructing lunar sentences. On the right hand side, is a text of Lunar Sentence II and it says, "When we pulverize words, what is left is neither mere noise nor arbitrary, pure elements, but still other words, reflection of an invisible and yet indelible representation: this is the myth in which we now transcribe the most obscure and real power of language."
The idea of this sentence is that even though we pulverize words, we still have to refer to it by new words. And I love that. It's like the heart of pure poetry.
The relationship with Mayan hieroglyphs was something that I felt with great passion. The moon was the night spectacle that ancient cultures would observe. It's always an image in the sky that reminds us of our place in the universe.
